Calculate mulch volume needed for your garden area.
The mulch calculator converts a bed area and a target mulch depth into cubic feet, cubic yards, and retail bag count, so you can decide between bagged mulch and a bulk delivery before you order. Enter the area in square feet (for irregular beds, add up the rectangles), the depth in inches, and optionally the bag size printed on the product — the default is the common 2 ft³ bag. A 2–3 inch layer is the usual choice for weed suppression in ornamental beds, while a thinner 1–2 inch layer suits annual beds you replant each season.
Volume in cubic feet = area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12, because an inch of depth is 1/12 of a foot. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27, the figure bulk suppliers quote. Bag count = cubic feet ÷ bag size, with 2 ft³ as the default since that is the most common size for hardwood and dyed mulch in US garden centers; change it to 1.5 or 3 ft³ to match your product label. Round bag count up — partial bags are not sold.
200 ft² at 3 inches deep needs 50 ft³ ≈ 1.85 yd³, which is exactly 25 bags of 2 ft³ mulch. At that quantity, compare the per-yard bulk price — deliveries are often cheaper above roughly 1.5 yd³.
A 32 ft² bed at 2 inches takes 5.33 ft³ — round 2.67 up to 3 bags of 2 ft³ product. Straw or shredded-leaf mulch in vegetable beds settles fast, so plan a mid-season top-up.
A ring 3 ft out from the trunk covers about 28 ft² (πr²). At 3 inches that is roughly 7.1 ft³ — between 3 and 4 bags. Keep mulch pulled a few inches back from the bark to avoid trunk rot.
500 ft² at 2 inches needs 83.3 ft³ ≈ 3.09 yd³. Order 3.5 yd³ bulk rather than hauling 42 individual bags; wood-chip path mulch compacts underfoot, so a small surplus is useful.
2–3 inches is typical for ornamental and shrub beds; 1–2 inches around shallow-rooted perennials and annuals. Going past 4 inches can keep rain from reaching the soil and invite rot at plant crowns.
1 yd³ = 27 ft³, so 13.5 bags at 2 ft³, 18 bags at 1.5 ft³, or 9 bags at 3 ft³. The calculator does this conversion for whatever bag size you enter.
